While the rest of the industry is content to allow shatter, Gerawan Farming is committed to dramatically reducing it. That’s why we don’t use drip irrigation, which tends to result in smaller vines, weaker roots and lower resistance to shatter. Instead, we use flood irrigation to give each vine a root system 3 times larger and stronger than drip-irrigated vines. And since flood irrigation replenishes moisture deep in the soil, vines have a “reserve” to help them thrive during stressful weather, and produce a stronger, sweeter, more shatter-resistant grape with superior flavor and shelf life.
